Our Story

South Texas Mushrooms is based in Pharr, Texas; established in 2019 by Alvaro Gurrola Jr, Estevan Gonzales, and Leo Martinez.

When Al’s father was diagnosed with a fatal autoimmune disorder, these three came together to combine their skills and find an alternative healing method for Mr. Gurrola other than chemotherapy. After looking into new forms of organic medication, they discovered an increase in the use of mycelium across various industries.

Upon learning about the different health benefits each type of mushroom can provide, Al and Leo began experimenting by growing reishi mushrooms as a way to treat Mr. Gurrola’s autoimmune disorder and improve his overall health - and it began to work!

Since then, Al and Leo have scaled the business to include a wide range of gourmet and organic mushrooms and mushroom based products for the purpose of re-engineering good health and well being through mycology while making it accessible and affordable for the local community.
